Even the Declaration of Independence Needed Edits

4th of July here in the States brings good food, good fun, and hopefully good thoughts about how we started as a country.

Being in a writerly mood this morning I’m thinking about that great document the Declaration of Independence and how it came about. Did it just pop-up out of nowhere to become this rallying point for the colonists? Of course not!

There was a rough draft and edits, then discussion and amendments, and finally the document we’ve all come to know.

Just remember to substitute “writing crit group” for “2nd Continental Congress” and it all looks amazingly similar to any other writer’s day.

So quill pen in hand (okay, more likely a keyboard on desk or lap) let us go forth to revise and polish our manuscripts.
